De La Hoya says Mayweather wasn’t mentally into Maidana rematch

Everybody has an opinion on any given fight, but those opinions seem to come out in hoards whenever a Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight is brought up.

Golden Boy Promotions founder and Hall of Fame boxer, Oscar De La Hoya gave his two cents on Mayweather’s rematch with Marcos Maidana, an event his Golden Boy Promotions and Mayweather’s, Mayweather Promotions co-promoted.

With on-again-off-again beef between Mayweather and Maidana it is no surprise that De La Hoya had nothing good to say about the bout that went down Sept. 13. De La Hoya did make a valid point about Mayweather not being fully into the fight, but despite that still getting the easy win.

Mayweather has announced that there will be some changes in his team going forward and that is something many suspect was on Mayweather’s mind throughout fight week.

Longtime corner man, Rafael Garcia was absent in Money May’s corner in the Maidana rematch and shortly after the bout, Rafael announced he would be retiring.

Then there is talk of longtime adviser and Mayweather Promotions CEO Leonard Ellerbe being in his way out of Mayweather’s camp, but Ellerbe was by Mayweather’s side at Tuesday’s Nevada Athletic Commission meeting where Money May was questioned on a number of things portrayed on the Showtime documentary series, All Access.

Add all of that to the controversy he set up for himself say Ray Rice’s original two-game ban from the NFL for his domestic abuse should have been kept despite graphic surveillance video showing the horrendous attack.

All of that and then some had Mayweather appearing distant the entire fight week, and wasn’t his usual, fun-loving self.

De La Hoya will only hope for Mayweather’s distractions to continue as he and HBO are looking to claim two fight dates that have belonged to Mayeather for the better part of the last several years. Cinco De Mayo weekend in May and Mexican Independence Day in September.

With a rumored Saul “Canelo” Alvarez-Miguel Cotto bout being rumored for May 2, 2015, on HBO pay-per-view, the attempted date swipe could be coming earlier than Mayweather would hope.

With Mayweather saying he only has two fights left until he calls it quits, having completion on those dates will seriously hurt his profitability heading into retirement.

A Canelo-Cotto bout would give any Mayweather bout a run for its money barring the ever elusive Mayweather-Manny Pacquiao fight finally comes to fruition (we all know it won’t).

Needless to say the next year could prove to be very interesting if Golden Boy and HBO do decide to go after Mayweather’s favorite fight dates and could bring boxing a breath of fresh air that it so desperately needs.
