Now that the news of Saul “Canelo” Alvarez jumping ship from Showtime to HBO has come and gone we can focus on the fights the will be aired on the cable network.

The first date on the new HBO deal is slated for Dec. 6 with an official opponent yet to be determined, but is widely rumored to be Joshua Clottey.

Clottey represents a fighter that has been in there with some heavy hitters, but let’s face it, he has seen his best days in the ring come and go.

Facing names like Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao and Zab Judah to name a few, going off Clottey’s resume the once-retired fighter appears to be a solid pick.

But reality is, at this point, the 36-year-old Clottey is nothing more than a bonafide sparring partner, giving him an easy, showcase-like win setting up a big pay-per-view showdown with Cotto on May 2, 2015.

With HBO wanting to reintroduce Canelo to its subscribers in a dominant fashion, picking a fighter that won’t give Alvarez much trouble is a smart thing on their side to grow buzz around the budding star.

So although there are far better choices out there for Canelo to face, setting him up wih Clottey and he solid resume will be a good thing in the long run for HBO as it looks to make Alvarez its shining star, carrying the network’s boxing coverage in the future.

Canelo also touched on Floyd Mayweather’s rematch with Marcos Maidana and called the fight “boring,” comparing it to the fight he had with Money May.

Mayweather had an easier time against Canelo, but still won both fights with Maidana relatively easy so Canelo even trying to bad mouth the fights is in bad taste.

He tried and he was dominated by Mayweather, now he can look toward the future as he will most likely never face Money May again, something that will benefit his career going forward, as another loss could seriously put his star potential in jeopardy.
