Former European K-1 Champion talks about last minute fight w/Jeff Monson years ago & Fedor’s popularity in Europe

World meet Sergej Maslobojev. Before we get into this story, Mr. Sergei is a jack of all trades as they say. Having trained in Kick Boxing, K-1, Muay Thai in the early part of his life and career, Sergei become a European K-1 Champion. He decided to transition into MMA after seeing Mirko Cro-Cop beat dudes down in Pride and dedicated himself for a year. He is know training in the sweet science as we saw him hitting the bags at the high altitude training center in Big Bear when were there filming Robert Guerrero and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez.

We got to talk with him and he revealed all this to us. Our eyes widen as he told us the Jeff Monson story. So back to the story. Like we mentioned after the year of training he felt he was ready for a few fights. He racked up a few wins and was at a point where he felt he was ready for some higher competition. He asked his manager to book him a fight. He had some trouble at first, with many in Europe knowing his K-1 credentials but he finally landed a fight with Cage Wars Championship in Belfast, Ireland. Sergej continued to train up to his fight, not knowing much about his opponent. Finally a few days before his bout, he became curious as to who he would fight and he asked his manager who his opponent would be. “Oh, some guy named Jeff Monson,” Sergej recounted to us. “I looked him up on Google and I said wow! Big guy.” Sergej would go on with the bout on March 29th, 2009 against Monson but ended up getting choked out in the second round. Tough luck right?

Thouhg Sergej is not a full time boxer, he talks about how huge Fedor is in Europe, citing how Europeans love him and they all wish to see him bounce back. It is a pretty funny story and we hope you enjoy it!
