As three-division world champ Abner Mares looks to continue his winning ways in the ring, he should have no problem in doing so against longtime veteran Jhonny Gonzalez on August 24 at the StubHub Center in Carson, Calif.

Mares, the reigning WBC featherweight champion is coming off his ninth round TKO victory over Daniel Ponce De Leon on the Floyd Mayweather-Robert Guerrero undercard in May and has all the momentum and the Southern California crowd in his favor.

Gonzalez will be a virtual no-show in the ring as he was at the press conference, as he has fought mostly marginal opponents over the last several years.

When Gonzalez faced his only quality opponent in that time in De Leon in 2012, he lost via technical decision after a huge cut occurred over Gonzales’ right eye in Round 8. The bout went to the score cards at that point, and De Leon won unanimously.

Mares is steadily making waves in the boxing world, especially after moving up to featherweight and disposing of De Leon to nab a title in a third weight division in as many years. Beating Gonzalez will add another former champion to his resume and keep his career moving with full force.

The co-featured bout features up-and-comer junior featherweight Leo Santa Cruz taking on the WBC junior featherweight champion Victor Terrazas.

Terrazas won the WBC title in his last bout against Christian Mijares in Mexcio City via split-decision and will have one of the toughest challenges of his career in a young and hungry Santa Cruz.

Santa Cruz vacated his IBF bantamweight title to take on Alexander Munoz in his last bout on the Mayweather-Guerrero undercard and had little trouble in that bout winning via Round 5 TKO.

Expect a close fight with many hard punches in the bout and a knockout winner wouldn’t be surprising, as both Munoz and Santa Cruz boast more than adequate power.
