Bravo to the UFC for signing one of the most exciting lightweight fighters in KJ Noons despite the fact that he’s lost his last 4 out of 5 fights. Clearly, Joe Silva and the rest of the decision-making crew understand that in the dwindling talent pool in the lightweight division needs fresh blood, and KJ, when he’s not getting laid on (see Josh Thomson) can be one of the most pleasant fighters to watch in the game today. KJ’s resume of striking accomplishments reads as shockingly complete. He’s an 11-2 pro boxer, he’s a decorated kickboxer and until Carlos Condit and GSP had their way with him, he was the only guy to defeat Nick Diaz for years. KJ Noons is a dangerous guy on the feet.

That’s why he doesn’t think Donald Cerrone will stand with him in their fight at UFC 160.

That’s a damn shame, considering this fight has every reason to be fight of the night, and when I saw it booked, I suspected it had fight of the year potential. Cerrone has a solid kickboxing background, and is always willing to stand and bang, but Greg Jackson may strike and tell Cowboy to get his first win of 2013.

This is what KJ said to The MMA Hour:

“I thought right away it’s a great matchup, great fireworks,” said Noons on the Sherdog Radio Network’s “Beatdown” show. “I’ve got a lot of respect for the guy as a fighter … . He’s very well versed. He’s a very well-rounded fighter. He likes to stand and bang, and he can mix it up anywhere.”

“I’m not making excuses for my losses, but the last five fights, the first loss was to Nick Diaz, which was a very close fight in a weight division which I don’t even fight in,” Noons said. “I did that for the organization because they asked me to. … I did lose to [Jorge] Masvidal, so we can say that’s a loss. Came back and won a fight after that, and then I fought Josh [Thomson] and he just laid on me like a human blanket. I kind of look at that like he was pretty scared to fight. I guess it wasn’t even really a fight, and then last fight, the judges gave it to [Couture]. Like I said, I’m not trying to make a lot of excuses, but it’s just kind of where the cards fell.”

“Stylistically, I believe I still have a lot of fights left,” said Noons. “I’m an exciting fighter. I think that has a lot to play in what the UFC decides. … I’m pretty confident that my style of fighting is pretty exciting and people like to watch it. That’s what the UFC likes. They like exciting fights and what people want to see.”

“There’s only been one person that’s stood and banged with me,” said Noons. “It was Nick Diaz. I don’t know if that’s the smartest thing … . I train for every aspect of the game because it’s MMA. It might look like it’s going to be a standup war, but people want to put it wherever it’s going to be the most to their advantage. I feel like the biggest advantage for me is standing. He’s probably going to be wanting to take it anywhere, make my hands tired, make legs tired. I’m ready for wherever the fight goes. I think it’s going to be exciting anywhere.”

“The Reem” is back after a brutal knockout loss that came from the gigantic hands of Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva at UFC 156. His opponent will also be a humongous heavyweight in 6’7″ Travis Browne, who returns after quickly defeating Gabriel Gonzaga with elbow strikes as “Napao” was trying to get in on a takedown.

When these two Heavyweights head into the Octagon on Aug. 17 in Boston, they will likely be looking to add more content to their highlight reels. And get this, it’s not the main event! Dana White apparently has more plans for FOX Sports 1′s debut show. The card already features hometown kid Joe Lauzon, a welterweight war with Matt Brown and Thiago Alves is also on the card, which has got fireworks written all over it. The only thing left to emphasize the top of a card, more than knockout punching heavyweights, is a title fight.

Maybe Gustafsson vs. Machida will finally fill a slot to determine who is the top contender to fight Jon Jones for the belt. Who knows?

Travis Browne and Alistair Overeem both have a common opponent in Antonio “Bigfoot Silva, who fights Cain Velasquez this Saturday. Silva stunned Browne in the first round with one big right-hand and followed up with more powerful strikes. That was after an apparent knee injury Browne must have suffered earlier in round one. Overeem managed to take “Bigfoot” into the final frame, taking the first two rounds before completely running out of steam. It was early in round three when Alistair was backed against the fence and knocked out by Antonio Silva.

Mikkel Kessler and Carl Froch are just days away from going head-to-head this Saturday evening on HBO from the 02 Arena in London. This time in Froch’s homeland after their initial 12-round war in 2010, when Kessler emerged victorious in his land of Denmark while gaining the WBC Super Middleweight Belt.

Mikkel Kessler has not lost since their first fight nearly three years ago, and finishing each of his last three wins by way of Knockout, while Carl Froch became the first to put a blemish on the record of Lucian Bute with a dominant win, finishing by TKO in the fifth. Both of Saturday’s super middleweight studs have crossed paths with the undefeated superstar, Andre Ward.

Ward shares some insight on how he feels the fight will unfold.

“I think Kessler has kind of dipped a little bit since he and I fought, and even since he fought Froch the first time. Even though it’s going to be a tough fight, it’s going to be back and forth. I can’t see Kessler winning this.

“Kessler’s last two performances, he hasn’t fought the best guys – a shopworn Allan Green then Brian Magee who’s very tough but limited – and he’s going to look good against them, but I don’t know if he has the same fire as when he fought Froch the first time. I would be shocked if Kessler got his hand raised. I think Froch wins and I wouldn’t be surprised if Froch caught and stopped him.”

“SOG” sees the Brit being too much for the Dane to withstand this time around. Who better to take notes from than the man who has been in the ring with both of these cats. Can Carl Froch redeem his 2010 loss to Kessler by dishing out some payback in his own hometown? Will Mikkel Kessler defeat Froch once again and silence the critics?

Find out Saturday on HBO, when Froch and Kessler meet for the IBF and WBA Super Middleweight straps.

After suffering a brutal knockout loss to Juan Manuel Marquez last December, questions swirled if Manny Pacquiao would ever be the same again. Many called for his retirement while Pacquiao vowed to return and return he will. On November 23rd, we will get answers to the many questions we have about Pacquiao when he faces Brandon Rios in Macau, China.

What will happen when Rios connects a flush shot on Pacquiao? Is Pacquiao’s confidence in himself shattered due to the loss to Marquez? Will Pacquiao be less willing to exchange and take chances like he use to? We gotta put those questions in the bag for now, though we can all agree on one thing, Pacquiao is running on the tail end of his career.

Freddie Roach feels the same way and probably has run the questions we have about Pacquiao through his own mind as well. Roach spoke on the Rios matchup and is a little uneasy about it, “I want Manny in a action fight and this will be a tough one. It is the young vs. the old at this point and it is a little bit dangerous. That is why I was looking for the Marquez rematch but he wont fight us but we will continue until that fight does come around again.”

We will get answers come November the 23rd, and whether you agree with Rios getting this match with Pacquiao due to his loss to Alvarado, it is safe to say, it will be a damn exciting fight.

Currently riding high on an eighteen-fight win streak, Glover Teixeira (20-2) has been on the rise and is looking to continue his winning ways when he takes on James Te-Huna (16-5) this Saturday at UFC 160: “Velasquez vs. Bigfoot II,” live on pay-per-view (PPV) from Las Vegas, Nevada at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.

The brawling Brazilian prefers to stand and bang, always moving in and headhunting while holding a black belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, . His opponent James Te-Huna is a power puncher himself, who will likely look to trade strikes with Teixeira and aim for his own early knockout.

It’s no secret what Teixeira’s game plan will be. He and Te-Huna will meet in the center of the Octagon and land on each other until one of them falls flat on the canvas. Teixeira speaks on his particular approach to every fight and the perks of being a nonstop power striker in the cage.

“I try to put power in every move I make. This has been a characteristic of mine for a long time. Since I first started training. When I am hitting pads, I hit them strongly. It has to be hard. First, because you’ll work your cardio. And also because the opponent will respect your punches. Every punch you throw he will want to get away. Each punch is for a knockout.”

It is definitely the sheer violence these two bring that makes this match up so interesting. Which can also make Teixeria vs. Te-Huna the most competitive bout to happen on the main card this weekend, thus making it a top candidate to take “Fight of the Night” honors and a fifty-thousand dollar bonus check. Or even “Knockout of the night” if one of them gets caught clean.

Can Glover topple James Te-Huna and prove he’s worthy of the title “rising star,” or will Te-Huna be the first in the UFC to find the target on Teixeira?

Place your bets!

Says he matches up better with Anderson than Bones." />

After the last few years at light heavyweight, it looks like Gegard has seen the light and will take his talents to middleweight, where he belongs. As a middleweight, Mousasi went 24-2-1 with his only losses coming to Akihiro Gono and Petras Markivcius. Then, Gegard moved to light heavyweight, took part in the Super Hulk Tournament, defeating Mark Hunt at heavyweight, then won the light heavyweight Strikeforce strap, losing it to King Mo, but never losing again. In fact, he has a 9-1-1 lhw record (remember that ridiculous Keith Jardine draw????). Now the 27-year -old is reevaluating his torso, and he’s come to the conclusion that middleweight may be best for him. Gegard’s achilles heel has long been his wrestling, so maybe he thinks his lack of takedown defense will effect him more at light heavyweight than middleweight. Makes sense.

He gave MMAFighting these quotes:

“There’s a big chance that I will go to middleweight, it all depends on the fights that I’m going to get. If I’m going to get a big name at middleweight, I’ll probably go down.

“It’s all about matchups. Let’s say they’re going to give me somebody like Vitor Belfort that’s maybe a contender. That’s the kind of fight I want.”

“To be honest, I believe middleweight will be much better for me, I will give my opponent less advantages. But at the end of the day it’s all about skills. That doesn’t mean that size advantages always win, but like I’ve said, in the highest level, you don’t want to give the slightest edge to your opponent. Everyone is skilled, everyone has abilities. So that’s why I think middleweight will be much more suitable to my body frame.

“It’s all about the opportunity, I really want to go for this belt. I believe that style-wise, matchup-wise, I matchup much better against Anderson Silva than Jon Jones, but it doesn’t mean that I’m scared to fight at 205. Jon Jones is skilled and so is Anderson Silva, but at the highest levels, when you’re competing against the top levels, you don’t want to give anybody an advantage. So I don’t want to give a weight and size difference advantage also. That’s why I said middleweight.”

“My focus is to get to the belt as soon as possible, I‘ve done the route of [waiting]. I don’t have those things that other fighters complain about, jetlag and days off. I don’t have those issues. I never have. So I’m just looking for big fights.

“The fight I had last (Ilir Latifi), the guy wasn’t known, he wasn’t ranked. It doesn’t mean anything. But I have a history. I only haven’t fought in UFC, but I have a history. People come and get immediate title shots. I don’t think that’s going to be the case for me, but I’ve beaten champions, ex-champions. So it’s all about one, maybe two big names and then I hope to get a title shot.”

“I think size-wise, the difference wouldn’t be much. Also matchup-wise, I think Anderson is more of a striker, Jon Jones is more of a takedowns guy. So I think matchup-wise and also size-wise [it makes more sense]. But I don’t have any problem fighting Jon Jones either. So before people make something else out of it and say, ‘Ah, he’s already losing’ — I’m confident. I’m a fighter. If I don’t have any confidence I can win a fight, then I shouldn’t be fighting. So it’s not about that. It’s just being smart.

“I fought Mark Hunt, you know? I fought K-1 at heavyweight. My last fights, Mike Kyle was much bigger. The guy that I fought, Latifi, he cut 20, 22 pounds before that. He was also much heavier. Size doesn’t mean a lot. But like I said, on the highest level guys are much better, so you don’t want to give any advantage. That’s what I’m saying.”

Choosing Anderson Silva as your goal over Jon Jones is a scary proposition, but if anyone could do it, it’s Gegard. I’ve loved watching him fight for years, and hopefully he can make a real mark on whatever division he chooses.

Today Microsoft revealed its new generation of gaming/home entertainment hardware, and with it EA UFC made its first digital appearance. I would normally be more excited for this, but there is almost nothing to really talk about. EA UFC will more than likely be out sometime after March 2014, and we may or may not see the game at E3 in a few weeks. For those not in the know, E3 is the Electronic Entertainment Expo, and it blows the doors off of gaming year after year. It’s where all the games that aren’t out yet are demoed and tested to the gaming press at large.

Below is the trailer for EA UFC, which we have no doubt will be amazing, but in typical EA fashion, we got kind of a crappy trailer.

Looks pre-rendered to us, but that also looks completely do-able on the next generation of hardware. What do you guys think? Was the reveal with a bang or whimper?

When Juan Manuel Marquez decided on Timothy Bradley as his next opponent, it was met with adulation and criticism. Marquez fans had been searching for a definitive close of the rivalry between their man and Manny Pacquiao and in their eyes, finally got that with Marquez’s KO over the Pacman. A 5th bout would seem redundant to Marquez fans, given the brutal nature of the KO. Pacquiao fans were hoping for a piece of redemption and claimed if Pacquiao was able to give Marquez four fights, the least Marquez could do was give Pacquiao one last fight.

The hopes of Pacquiao fans were shattered though when Marquez announced he would be facing WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley in the fall. Freddie Roach, the trainer of Manny Pacquiao reacted with disappointment. Roach is just as competitive as Pacquiao as the former fighter certainly wants to get some wins back his way after a 2012 full of losses and fighters leaving his stable.

Marcos Villegas caught up with Roach as he gave us a update on Pacquiao and his reaction to Marquez’s decision not to fight his star pupil.

John Cholish works on Wall Street and has a high-paying job, so he could do this retirement thing. He made it to the UFC by fighting as a side gig, strictly for the love of it. But it puts into perspective the amount of fighters that are possibly receiving an un-liveable wage while trying to make ends meet on a retail job, or nothing at all. It’s scary to to think that a UFC fighter, billed as the cream of the crop and the best of the best, could be earning less than an amateur baseball player or a Starbucks barista while putting their brain on the line night after night.

But this is the profession they chose, for better or worse. Some a deemed warriors, others as wildmen, but all have something in common – they started by making almost no cash in their careers. Does something need to change? Will it ever change? Zuffa makes millions (allegedly) off each event they put on, and granted, as a private company they don’t have to release any information they don’t want to, but there is a mandatory minimum pay rate in the Unionized sports like football, baseball and the NBA.

The counterpoint, as I’ve heard from many fighters, is that this is prizefighting, and you should fight and do well to get the best pay. Cholish was 1-2 in his UFC career, but that isn’t changing the fact that after coaching, nutrition and general training, he probably broke even monetarily fighting in the world’s largest and most prolific fighting organization. It’s a bummer. The fact that he has to pay for his cornerman to come to the fight is a travesty.

Here’s what Cholish said following his loss to Gleison Tibau at UFC on FX 8:

“I’m fortunate enough that I have a job that provides for me really well,” Cholish said. “I give a lot of these guys credit that fight at this level. I think they could be compensated much better based on the income that the UFC takes in. Fortunately, I can just walk away and I’m OK with it. By no means do I mean it disrespectfully toward any other fighters because I think they do a great job. But hopefully Zuffa and the UFC will start paying them a little better.”

“At the end of the day, it’s hard,” he said. “I have great coaches that take time off and travel. They deserve money, as well. To be completely honest, on a fight like this, I’m losing money to come down here. Flights, hotel rooms, food – and that doesn’t even cover the cost of the time I have to pay for my coaches for training. It’s funny because people talk about the fighters, but at the same time there’s camps and coaches behind the fighters that you don’t even see. So if a fighter is having a tough time making ends meet, how do you think his coaches are doing?”

“I don’t know if there is one significant answer,” he said. “And again, this is just my opinion, so there’s no right or wrong. It’s hard because you have top-level guys like Georges St-Pierre, Jon Jones, Anderson Silva that have started off where we started and worked really hard to get there. So is it right for them to have to give up what they did to try and sacrifice for the greater good? It’s an individual sport, at the end of the day. It’s not like you have a whole team that can kind of step away, like in baseball, when the first union started. Only time will tell. (Zuffa is) a private company. Maybe when it goes public at one point?

“I know the Zuffa higher-ups probably aren’t happy with what I’m saying, but I’d like to think I can speak for the lower portion of fighters. A lot of guys I’m sure would love to say the same thing but aren’t in a position where they have another source of income.”

TRT had nothing to do with that kick, but it had something to do with Vitor training with a new vigor, like he wasn’t an eighteen year veteran of the sport. TRT helped him push himself, probably making him faster and stronger, but yeah, you’re right, Luke. TRT had nothing to do with the actual kick landing. That was all Jesus.

Props to Luke Rockhold for taking his first loss in years like a man after weeks of crap talk and build up. It couldn’t have felt good losing in Brazil to Vitor and his veiny muscles. This is Luke Rockhold talking to MMAjunkie after his loss:

“It doesn’t feel good,” ”I haven’t lost in a long time. I don’t like losing.”I train to win, and I came to win. It definitely doesn’t feel good.”

“I mean it’s hard to say what went wrong, I was feeling good. I was finding my timing. I felt like I was controlling things, and then he landed a spinning heel kick to my head.”

“I felt good in this fight,” “I had a great camp. I felt good in the fight. I was focused. I don’t know if I got overconfident or what exactly happened. I don’t know. I thought I had it.

“I felt good. I saw his punches. I saw everything. I was landing some shots. I felt like I was starting to control things, and then I got caught. It happens.”

“TRT had nothing to do with that kick,”

“It sucks right now, I don’t know. I want to get back in there. I want to fight, obviously. Everyone says it, but what can you do at this point? I want to get in there. I want to fight. I want to redeem myself.”

“I lost to one of the best guys in the world, and it was something pretty spectacular, I don’t know what to really think about anything right now. I just want to get back and fight and beat someone up. That’s what I’m focused on. Good job by Vitor. What can I say?”

We think Luke should rematch Jacare, or maybe take on Hector Lombard? It could be the middleweight version of Hunt/Struve with the height difference. Luke is a hell of a talent, he’ll bounce back. As far as Vitor is concerned, the real question is if he gets the winner of Anderson/Weidman.

Odd. Bellator says it doesn’t want UFC castoffs to fill their ranks, yet half their upcoming season 9 welterweight is filled with — you guessed it: UFC castoffs. Personally, I don’t mind. Those were Bjorn Rebney’s words, and I’m perfectly fine with seeing Matt Riddle take on Paul Daley , Douglas Lima, Ben Saunders or any other combination of the killer’s row that is in the circular Bellator cage.

If you need a reminder, two out of three of Riddle’s last three wins have been overturned to no contests due to marijuana in Riddle’s system. We don’t need to turn this into a marijuana discussion, there’s been too much of that lately already, but the guy would be 9-3 and climbing up to a fairly decent UFC ranking with his newfound takedowns and dominating top control of his opponents. Riddle used to be nothing more than a brawler, now he’s finding ways to win if plan A or B don’t work out, that’s respectable. Maybe marijuana taught him to deduce situations and and work through problems? I dunno.

Either way, Riddle is headed back to Spike, who made him a star in the first place on TUF 7, and frankly, I like him in the tournament. I think he’ll make for some good competition.

Thanks to MMAJunkie for the scoop.

After the last two weeks of second-guessing and wondering if the Mark Hunt hype train would be derailed due to a prior arrest years ago, thus effecting his Visa and travel to the US for his fight against JDS, everything has cleared. Life is good, we are cool, everything is great. Now, we shall see the rightful number one contender fight go down at UFC 160. Rally for Mark Hunt? We never needed to. Mark hunt just kept on knocking other humans out with a such ferocity he couldn’t be ignored for long. Now the only question is: can Hunt knock out a man in JDS who has never been knocked out? Yeah, I think he can.

Hunt made the announcement via Twitter earlier:

Roy Nelson was on deck waiting for a JDS rematch if Mark Hunt wasn’t going to get his Visa cleared, but now Roy will have to head beck to the end of the line to maybe fight the winner of Overeem/Browne? Or maybe Gonzaga? All we know for sure is that the winner of JDS/Hunt will take on the winner of Cain and Bigfoot. Man, can’t wait.

There is absolutely nothing we’d like to see more than Anderson Silva taking on Bones Jones to truly decide who is the greatest fighter in the world today. No better gift could be granted, and hopefully it happens, but at the same time, I don’t want to kill myself holding my breath. Yet another brick in the foundation of what could be the biggest and most important fight in MMA history was made today when Brazilian MMA outlet Tatame spoke to Anderson Silva’s trainer, Rogeiro Camoess, and he basically threw down the gauntlert– Jones or bust:

“The biggest challenge would be Jones, first the natural question of size difference. In his division, Anderson has the advantage of size, but Jon Jones has even more… He has the same power as Anderson…”

“He is very reserved in his choices. When he decides he will fight, he calls me, Ramon Lemos, and Distak ,and asks if we think he should fight. But first, the decision is his. He never talked to me about it, I never said any name…. He has a work ethic off the charts.”

“After this fight against Chris Weidman, perhaps he will fight Jones in New York, and we will prepare for it. We never chose fighter. But I would like to see this fight against Jones yes. I think Anderson deserves to end up being called the best fighter ever.”

“I want to see this as his last fight career – he wins and retires. “

I wonder what will come first: Anderson vs. Jones or MMA in New York?

I think we can all agree that Paulo Thiago’s greatest Octagon moment was when he knocked out Josh Koscheck at UFC 95. From there he lost to Jon Fitch, beat Mike Swick and Jacob Volkmann, then kind of went on a spiral, losing four out of his last five fights to the likes of Dong Hyun Kim, Martin Kampmann, Diego Sanchez and Siyar Bahadurzada. Not a bad group of people to lose to, but who likes justifying an L?

Despite these losses, it seems like the UFC has enjoyed Thiago’s Brazilian special forces PR he provides, and he’s still around. This week at UFC on FX 8 he was expected to face Lance Benoist, but when Lance had to pull out of the fight, Michel Prazeres stepped in with his 16-0 record full of finishes.

To some, having a last-minute opponent change to one of the best unsigned talents in Brazilian MMA may cause a mental disruption, to Paulo, who is used to dodging bullets more than fists, it’s no biggie.

This is what Pulo said to UFC.com:

“To get into the Special Forces you go through a special training program, that training requires a lot from you physically and psychologically. And once you are in, the daily work of a BOPE officer requires great emotional control. There are tense situations where shooting and death can occur so you must have great emotional control. That helps me in the fight and before going in, during the tense moments. When I am waiting to go it helps me keep calm and go in with more tranquility.”

If Paulo goes into the Octagon with tranquility, I’d hate to see him angry.
