Today marked one of the most memorable and totally awesome day’s I have ever been apart of in boxing. I’m chuckling right now just thinking about it and really came away with a different view on Don King. Yes, that Don King. The one that Mike Tyson has accused of time and time again of stealing millions from him. Now in his twilight years, the boxing world doesn’t see much of King but when he enters a room, you bet your ass you feel his presence.
Today at the Bermane Stiverne vs. Chris Arrerola 2 press conference at USC, Don King stole the show. The hall of fame promoter did what he does best and not only talked up the fight and labeled the press conference as “the greatest press conference of the last 30 years,” he had everyone in attendance dying of laughter.
King is like that crazy grandpa that says whatever the hell comes to his mind. It’s equally terrifying and enjoyable having him around for the sheer fact that you never know what the heck is going to happen. And yea, it was pretty much the Don King show today. More a majority of the event it was King who commanded the room as he rambled about fighting for your rights, women’s rights, something about ambrosia, going over satellite time for the press conference and tickets being so cheap for this fight that even thieves can come out. Which brings me to the best quote in my eyes of the day given but Mr. King. Now it has to do with the ticket prices of the event which are priced at $300, $200, $100, $50 and $25. The announcement of the prices by Dan Goosen of Goosen Tudor Promotions promoted King with this gem, “You know it’s [tickets] a steal but you know what? We got to give them a break too because the thieves got to live.”
Gold. Just pure comedy gold.
