Saul “Canelo” Alvarez’s decision to face Alfredo Angulo is the perfect comeback fight for him

canelo vs angulo

Saul “Canelo” Alvarez is set to make his return to the ring after suffering his first loss at the hands of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in September when he steps into the ring with Alfredo Angulo March 8 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nev.

Alvarez lost to Mayweather via a majority decision that should have been a unanimous decision if it weren’t for controversial judge  C.J. Ross who scored the fight a draw, despite Mayweather clearly dominating the bout.

Angulo is coming off a loss of his own to Erislandy Lara in June, where he scored two knockdowns, but suffered an injury to the orbital bone in his left eye and lost the bout after it being stopped in the 10th.

Alvarez (42-1-1, 20 KOs) chose between Angulo (22-3, 18 KOs) and Carlos Molina for the bout after a rumored Miguel Cotto clash was shot down after Cotto opted to pass a multimillion dollar offer in hopes of facing Sergio Martinez this summer.

After being schooled by the defensive master that is Mayweather, Angulo is the perfect comeback bout for Canelo as he won’t be afraid to mix it up with Alvarez, ensuring for opportunities for a knockout victory being plentiful.

This will mark the first of what is expected to be a three-fight year for Alvarez in 2014, as he looks to get his career back on track after losing for the first time in 44 fights.

Angulo will look to get the marquee win of his career after his three career losses coming against the three best opponents he’s faced in Kermit Cintron, James Kirkland and Erislanday Lara.

The card will be promoted as “Toe to Toe” as the fight is expected to be a battle between two Mexican brawlers and should be a fan friendly fight come March.
