Roger Mayweather: ‘Floyd is going to throw more punches, be busier’ against Canelo Alvarez

Floyd Mayweather Jr.’s uncle/trainer, Roger Mayweather, says that Mayweather will be the busier fighter on Sept. 14 against Saul “Canelo” Alvarez when the two meet at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas Nev.

This news should shock anyone, as Mayweather Jr. has out-punched three-of-his-last-five opponents—which include Miguel Cotto, Victor Ortiz and Shane Mosley who were out punched and Robert Guerrero and Juan Manuel Marquez who out punched Mayweather Jr.—and as a whole out-punched his last five opponents combined (2,341 to 2,270) according to CompuBox numbers.

The number of punches Mayweather Jr. has thrown more than his opponents is slim, but the percentage of the landing rate is not. Mayweather Jr. has landed an average of 41 percent of his punches in his last five fights compared to only 17 percent landed by his opponents.

Any way you slice it, Mayweather Jr. has dominated each opponent in recent memory and his CompuBox numbers only help support that.

One thing to look at heading into the bout is CompuBox’s rankings of fighters with the greatest landing rate.  Mayweather Jr. comes in at No. 2 with his 41 percent and none other than Alvarez comes in at No. 1 just ahead of Mayweather Jr. at a 42 percent connect rate.

When you add in the opponents landing rate and get the plus-minus Mayweather comes in at No. 1 with a plus/minus of +24 (in his last 10 bouts) and Alvarez is No. 2 with a plus/minus of +18, as Alvarez’s opponents (in his last seven bouts) land an average of 24 percent of their punches.

If Mayweather (44-0, 26 KOs) does in fact throw more punches, being the busier fighter as uncle Roger said, Alvarez (43-0-1, 31 KOs) will be in for a long night.

Although Alvarez is touted more for his knockout power than Mayweather Jr., if Alvarez is caught as often as the average Mayweather Jr. opponent, there will be little chance of a KO blow being landed by Alvarez come Sept. 14.
