With the biggest fight of his career looming the last thing Robert “the Ghost” Guerrero needed was legal trouble, but the 30-year-old champ got just that when he was arrested Thursday for gun possession at JFK Airport in New York according to the New York Daily News.

The police told the Daily News that Guerrero was stopped before he could catch his flight that was headed to Las Vegas, Nev., but no other details have been released at this time.
In little over a month Guerrero is slated to take on undefeated, pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather on May 4, which will be the biggest fight of Guerrero’s 35-fight career.

There is no word on if the arrest will have any effect on the Mayweather fight, but if it does it would be a huge misstep in Guerrero’s career.

For anyone to try and bring a weapon on board of a plane, especially in this day in age is ridiculous. Being a boxer with emerging superstar potential, Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) and his handlers should have known better than to even think to bring any kind of weapon aboard a plane.

Mayweather (43-0. 26 KOs) should have little to say on this matter as he has had a slew of legal problems of his own in recent years and should be fully focused on their fight.

With the legal problems that Guerrero will face now, it is a potential distraction that could sour his big opportunity against Mayweather.

It will be interesting to see if there is any ill effect on Guerrero’s camp in Showtime’s All-Access (the network’s rival to HBO’s 24/7) and if there is, expect Mayweather to pick up the mind games he is famous for playing even more heading into May 4.
