Pablo Sarmiento says retirement talk for Sergio Martinez too soon; Feels Martinez never recovered from knockdowns

sarmiento on martinez to retire

It has been a few days since Miguel Cotto trounced former middleweight kingpin Sergio Martinez last Saturday on HBO PPV from the Garden in New York. In the discussion since then fans have expressed their opinion that Martinez, who is 39 years of age should retire.

Many say he was already done before coming into the Cotto-Martinez fight, with fans citing his performances against Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and Martin Murray. Others say that the Martinez that showed up was a injured one; citing that his movement and cuts were off, looking slow and sluggish. Either or if you were a Martinez fan, the replays of the knockdowns in the first round and the fight overall are difficult to watch.

You could imagine how difficult of a choice it was for Pablo Sarmiento, the trainer of Sergio Martinez to not only see his fighter perform so badly but see someone he loves dearly perform like a former shell of himself. In catching up with Sarmiento in this interview, we discuss what went thru his mind in that first round as well as why Martinez could never get a rhythm going and if last Saturday could be the last time we see Martinez in the ring.
