Mayweather outclasses Maidana en route to dominant rematch win

Heading into the rematch between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Marcos Maidana many felt that the master adjuster Money May is that the bout would be a one-sided affair. Mayweather proved everyone with those thoughts right as he breezed through Maidana Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas with a unanimous decision 116-11 (x2) and 115-112.

Looking a step faster and quicker with his punches tonight compared to May, Mayweather counter-punched his way through the majority of the fight, frustrating Maidana with his speed and accuracy.

CompuBox numbers showed Mayweather out landed Maidana 166-128 in total punches and 102-87 in power punches. Mayweather did so landing 51 percent of his total punches compared to 22 percent of Maidana and Money landed 58 percent of his power shots compared to just 26 percent form Chino.

In a strange moment in Round 8, Mayweather apparently was bit by Maidana during a clench, and the bout was paused for around a minute. After the alleged bite Mayweather explained he could no longer feel his hand after that.

“He bit my fingers so my hand went numb,” Mayweather said. “After the eighth round I couldn’t feel my hand.”

Despite that apparent foul, Mayweather went one to dominate the next few rounds and only lost the final round due to him coasting through knowing he had the bout in his pocket.

There were some questions to whether Mayweather’s age would begin to show here, but with how sharp Money May looked, he quieted all those questions.

Maidana said he was going to be more clam in the rematch and he was, but that played to his disadvantage, as he never mounted anything of real substance against Mayweather.

Mayweather did a great job off staying off the ropes, and when he did find himself on them he either bounced right off or clenched Maidana to get out of harm’s way.

Attention will now turn to whom Mayweather will face next in the last two bouts of his six-fight Showtime deal. In his post-fight interview with Jim Gray, Mayweather said he was open to a Manny Pacquiao bout if the two sides could work something out and that he takes care of business Nov. 22 against Chris Algieri in Macao.
