Looks like The Great Western Forum is back in business! After being a staple in boxing for close to 30 years the Forum Boxing series was finally stopped back in the late 90’s. It was a hard blow for the sweet science as The Forum played host to Ali-Norton 2, Julio Cesar Chavez, the debut of Oscar De La Hoya and built the career of fighters such as Marco Antonio Barrera and Juan Manuel Marquez. But, from the ashes the Forum has risen and under the moniker of being “fabulous” heads into this 2014 with the ambition of bringing boxing back to this hallowed ground.
First on the list is one of the Forum’s very own. Juan Manuel Marquez fought 12 of his 63 fights at the Arena and it served as a launching point for his career. He now looks to pin win number 13 at the forum and though the number maybe unlucky book markers have him as the favorite against Mike Alvarado. The bout will take place on May 17th on HBO as Top Rank held the opening press conference today to signify a return of boxing to the Forum but a homecoming of sorts for Marquez.
