It was a wild night at the Alamodome in San Antonio, TX as hard punching Argentinian Marcos Maidana solved the problem that was Adrien Broner via unanimous decision (115-110, 116-109,117-109) to a ecstatic arena.
Maidana would start the fight off strong as he landed some huge shots to the dome of Broner in round one but would test the resolve of the young champion in round two as he scored a knockdown. Broner walked back into his corner at the end of that round confident that all was not lost as he yelled at them, “We OK!”
He certainly showed that he was as he came back strong in the third round though his low punch output in the fight would be overshadowed by the pressure of Maidana.
With rounds going back and forth Maidana would score another knockdown in the eight round. Soon after Broner would clinch Maidana for a extended period of time that caused Maidana to throw a illegal head butt. A point was deducted from Maidana as the remainder of the fight saw Maidana’s harder punches have more of a effect on his challenger even though he was at a speed disadvantage.
At the end of the bell, a jubilant Maidana held his hands high and when the scores were announced and a winner was declared, Broner immediately left the ring straight to his locker room.
Marcos Maidana now claims the WBA welterweight title and in my mind, the right to ask for a fight against Floyd Mayweather Jr.
