Leading up to a fight the training and sparring a fighter endures can make or break their camp depending on what they get out of it. Leading up to his unified junior welterweight title fight with Danny Garcia, Lucas Matthysse announced he would be sparring against WBO welterweight champion Timothy Bradley in a move that could give him the edge on Sept. 14.

Bradley, who is preparing for his own highly anticipated bout with Juan Manuel Marquez, will be in there trying get the best out of his sparring session as well, which will only give Matthysse (34-2, 32 KOs) a better experience overall.

Having a world title holder who has tremendous skill in the ring sparring against you will give a fighter an  advantage right off the bat, as the level of competition he’ll face in sparring in Bradley is up to par with Garcia (26-0, 16 KOs).

One thing a sparring session won’t get Matthysse ready for is Garcia’s power, as he will be the most dangerous opponent he has faced in his career. Matthysse will have his chin tested as much as he will test Garcia’s chin, which is sure to create a very entertain fight.

If the fight comes down to who trained harder and got the most out of their camps, Matthysse choosing to spare Bradley could prove to be the advantage that gives Matthysse the edge in this bout.
