We all know that the heavyweight division is a distant memory of what it was back in the 90’s and late 2000’s. For many boxing fans, the sole reason why they became fans in the first place was due to classic heavyweight battles. There’s something about really really big dudes bashing each other over the head that has us in awe. The bigger they are the harder they fall right?

So it is just so sad to see where heavyweight boxing is now as compared to just a era or two ago. Where did all the good heavyweights go? Europe aside (they do have some pretty decent heavyweights) the United States has had a talent gap of really special heavyweights. Not one thing is the probable cause but factors such as youths wanting to play in other professional leagues, the marketing of those leagues and their bigger than life personalities have all certainly played a factor in it all. Hey it’s a hell of a lot easier to catch a ball than get hit by a 280 lbs behemoth of the course of a grueling twelve rounds right?

So it was with that thought in mind that when I had the chance to speak to former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield I wanted to see what he thought about the lacking division, one in which he helped build. So below, Holyfield speaks on this and his Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame induction.
