The Gold Medalist from Cuba has some fast hands and packs a ton of power in every punch. If you’re the type of fight fan who loves a technical brawl, then tune in to Yuriorkis Gamboa vs. Darley Perez for the WBA lightweight championship this Saturday night from Montreal on HBO. The fight card will also feature light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson vs. Adonis Stevenson.

Gamboa (22-0, 16 KO) is a fighter who is known at times to throw caution to the wind in his fights. It has caused him to suffer knockdowns against opponents who honestly have no where near the skill or ability of the Cuban gold medalist.  Yet it makes for some drama filled moments; Truth is a fighter with the skill and talent of Gamboa is simply too good to make mistakes like he has. You can label it as being young, being macho or simply being reckless.

In this group interview Gamboa address’ the criticism from fans on this subject:

” I think it has to do a lot with a coach of mine in Cuba use to tell me, that I use to go in there a little bit reckless, too much bravado and I would get careless. Unfortunately I keep committing those errors however I think it is part of my character but at the same time it makes me stronger because I get up from those [knockdowns] and eventually win.”

Will we see Gamboa hit the canvas on June 8th? You never know..I guess that is what makes a Gamboa fight so intriguing to watch, almost on the scale of a Amir Khan fight. Gamboa promises he will have some new tricks up his sleeve against his Colombian rival. A part of me wants to think he will and that the problems that have plagued him throughout his career will go away. Though the fan part of me hopes he stays the same…I sure love screaming in excitement when those unforeseen knockdowns happen.
