Saul Alvarez stops Kermit Cintron, Adrien Broner captures first world title

In a night that featured undefeated prospects and champions, the star of the evening, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez defended his WBC super welterweight title with a fifth round TKO win over Kermit Cintron. From the opening round, Alvarez’s weight and power was too much for his Puerto Rican opponent, whose own power was not respected by the champion.

As a result in the fourth round an overhand right which landed on the back of the ear of Cintron sat him to the canvas. It looked as if Cintron would not make it up, but he commanded something within that carried him through the round, throwing shots out of desperation at times. Alvarez continued to put together combinations of body shots, uppercuts and overhand rights, some of which landed and some blocked. Cintron for his own right was throwing hail mary blows though his body language showed that he would soon fall and the referee intervened with a stoppage at that point at 2:53 of round 5.

Adrien Broner continued his undefeated streak and captured his first world title in front of his hometown Cincinnati fans as he defeated Martin Rodriguez via KO in round three.

With the win Broner claimed the WBO junior light weight title as a uppercut to the body followed by a left hook connected on the jaw of Rodriguez who immediately fell to the canvas and could not get up. The action was stopped at 1:43.
