Adrien Broner vs. Gavin Rees-preview and breakdown

broner vs rees

Adrien “The Problem” Broner could present a problem to the largely untested Welsh fighter Gavin Rese when they meet for the WBC lightweight title Saturday night at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Despite boasting a record of 31-1-1, Rees’s record is made of a variety of European fighters who the casual boxing fan has never heard of. With Rees being accustom to fighting marginal opponents, no matter how tough some of them may be, stepping into the ring with Broner will be a rude awaking for the 32-year-old from Newbridge, Wales.

Expected to be the future of boxing once Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. call it a career in the near future, Broner (25-0, 21 Kos) has the unusual mix of natural ability, a fundamentally sound fight game and devastating knockout power.

Look for Broner to take control early and overwhelm Rees with his speed and witty defensive maneuvers that should have Rees frustrated by Round 5 or 6. On a five-fight streak of winning by KO expect Broner to add his sixth knockout in a row en route to an easy victory Saturday.

Broner will have to decide if he wants to stick around the lightweight division that lacks big name fights or to move up to the 140-pound junior welterweight division that has more than a few big fights waiting to happen.

The smart move would be moving up in weight and setting up fights with the likes of Danny Garcia, Amir Khan, Brandon Rios or the man that no one wants to face, the heavy-handed Lucas Matthysse in the junior welterweight ranks. Being able to win any of those aforementioned bouts would send Broner’s star power to the next level, cementing his spot as the next big thing in the sport.
