Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (48-1-1, 32 KOs) will make his return to the ring after an over year-long hiatus when he faces Andrzej Fonfara (26-3, 15 KOs) Saturday night at the StubHub Center in Carson, California.

The bout, which will air live on Showtime at 10 p.m. EDT/7 p.m. PDT, will show the boxing world how much Chavez Jr. has left and if his notorious laziness has been eradicated by the former WBC middleweight champion.

The year-long layoff occurred largely because of a contract dispute between Chavez Jr. and Top Rank Inc.

Before that, Chavez Jr. had a few moments that made one wonder how serious he was about his future in the sport.

Several lazy moments when he wouldn’t show up to train with Freddie Roach heading into his 2012 bout with Sergio Martinez started the issues. Shortly following the Martinez bout, which Chavez Jr. lost in a 12 unanimous decisions, he tested positive for marijuana and missed a year in the ring.

After that a lackadaisical Chavez Jr. got the favor of the judges in his first bout with Bryan Vera, despite most thinking he lost the September 2013 bout. Leading into that bout Chavez Jr; had issues with keeping his weight in control, which the majority of people associated with his unmotivated training that he’s rumored to have had.

His second bout with Vera last year was a better performance by Chavez Jr., this time fully deserving of the unanimous decision win he was awarded.

Chavez Jr. said he is ready to make a serious run in the sport, giving himself three to four years left in the ring.

His first step comes against Fonfara, a Polish fighter who has a tough-gritty style, utilizing his 6’2″ frame, to make fights awkward fo rhis opponenets.

He has decent power, and can give Chavez Jr. some trouble he keeps his distance and doesn’t allow Chavez Jr. to set his feet when he’s punching.
