Pacquiao vs. Algieri: Pacman rides 6 knock downs en route to easy UD victory

pacquiao algieri face off final

Many didn’t give American hopeful, Chris Algieri, a chance heading into his bout with pound-for-pound great Manny Pacquiao and the eight -division champion showed why.

Pacquiao jumped out as the aggressor in Round 1 and didn’t let up the entire bout held at The Venetian Macao in Macau, China.

Pacquiao won via unanimous decision with scores of 119-103 (x2) and 120-102, using six scored knock downs, two of them were slips but ruled knockdowns, to batter the Huntington, N.Y. native Saturday night.

“I was looking for the knockout,” Pacquiao said after the fight. “He was moving, it was hard.”

Algieri started out slow, looking like he was gauging Pacman for much of the first few rounds, maybe hoping Pacquiao would wear himself out.

Pacquiao scored his first knock down in Round 2, which replays showed was an obvious slip, but that slip was the beginning of the end for Algieri.

Algieri’s best round was in the fifth round, where he won on my scorecard (which I had Pacquiao ahead 119-103), but he didn’t land any real big shots, but won due to being more active.

The sixth round put an end to any momentum Algieri built up in the fifth as Pacquiao knocked him down twice more.

“It’s not so much the punching power, its how he mixes the punches,” Algieri said. “Manny is the best in the world fighting as Manny.”

Round 9 saw two more knock downs and the sixth and final one came in Round 10, which the bout could of been stopped at any point from there on out.

Give credit to Algieri for making it the full 12 rounds, as he showed that he does have tremendous heart, but this time his heart wasn’t enough as was the case against Ruslan Provodnikov in June.

Pacquiao showed that he is still an explosive fighter and the drop in weight payed off for Pacquiao. If he continues to fight around the junior welterweight limit then the Pacman of old could make his way back to a ring near you.

Pacquiao made reference to his Foot Locker commercial when he thinks Floyd Mayweather agreed to fight him when asked about a possible Mayweather bout.

Pacquiao said he is game for a megafight with Mayweather in 2015, and even with increased chatter of secret talks going on to make the fight, don’t get too excited until contacts are signed by the two.

“The people deserve the fight, the fans, its time to make that fight happen,” Pacman said.
