Fight Hub TV’s 2013 Fighter of the year in boxing: Floyd Mayweather Jr.

2013 has passed us and as we look towards a new year with new goals, we take a look back at the last year and the one fighter that changed the boxing landscape. No one did more to put boxing into the mainstream and put himself into the main stream as Floyd Mayweather Jr. did in 2013. His deal with Showtime was historic and it made him the richest athlete in all of sports (something that is ironic to us because everyone supposedly claims boxing is dead). That move from HBO to Showtime caused a domino effect on the sport as HBO would banish all Golden Boy Promotions fighters on their network and publicly stated that they would not feature any of their fighters on air.

Boxing fans and ourselves included are still pissed that HBO did this but one man was able to cause all this. To add to that, he took on two guys this year that boxing fans wanted him to face. Robert Guerrero came off a spectacular performance against Andre Berto in late 2012 and booked his ticket to a May date with Mayweather in Showtime’s PPV debut with the pound for pound best. Mayweather pulled off a master class performance against a elite level fighter and in the process made him look basic. We have to reiterate the fact of how hard it is to have a performance like the one Mayweather had in May against a elite level guy. Guerrero was no push over.

He then went ahead and fought the one guy we all wanted him to face other than Manny Pacquiao. Canelo Alvarez was the #1 guy at 154lbs and coming into the September mega fight we all thought that the combination of youth and power would give Mayweather his biggest problem to date. NOPE! Another one bit the dust as Money’s record moved to 45-0. Though Canelo did not have the experience of a Robert Guerrero he was the lineal number one guy at 154lbs. He was put to school by a natural junior welterweight, who not only out boxed him but came forward and was willing to exchange with him in the pocket.

Mayweather raised his stock with that spectacular win as the 36 year old went on a media tour after his win that raised his profile in the main stream eye. Yes it is cliche, yes you boxing fans are going to give us crap about it, but name one other fighter that has had a bigger impact on boxing this year than Floyd Mayweather Jr.

Yup, we hear the crickets also. Floyd Mayweather Jr. is our 2013 fighter of the year.
