De La Hoya: I’m prepared to put up the biggest guarantee in sports history to give fans the fight’

De La Hoya on Future of Golden Boy

There has been a lot of chatter lately about the long-sought after megafight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Manny Pacquiao and Golden Boy Promotions founder Oscar De La Hoya added to that Wednesday on Twitter.

Tweeting at ESPN’s flagship program, Sports Center, De La Hoya said he’d offer the largest guaranteed purse in sports history to get the bout signed.

That guarantee would reportedly be $100 million for Mayweather and $80 million for Pacquiao, according to a story by The Manilla Bulliten.

This comes on the heels of a story from The Daily Mail reporting that Mayweather is demanding a rematch clause be put in a contract to get the rumored bout signed, a stipulation Roach said would be agreed to.

Mayweather and Pacquiao bout sent out social media posts aimed at each other Wednesday, which is another encouraging sign that the fight could finally come to fruition. There have been posts from each fighter in the past, but a response from either fighter in such a quick fashion was missing until today.

With everyone seemingly on board to finally get Mayweather and Pacquiao in the ring together, there is a real glimmer of hope for sport fans worldwide that the bout of the decade could be announced within the next few months, most likely for May 2, 2015.

But, as we have seen with past Mayweather-Pacquiao rumors, anyone who gets overly excited about the fight possibly getting signed is setting themselves up for a huge letdown.

So even with all of the encouraging developments taking place don’t get too hyped about the bout until the fight in officially announced by both Top Rank and Golden Boy.
