Cotto vs. Canelo winner to face GGG?

GGG Cotto Canelo

If the World Boxing Council (WBC) gets their way, the winner of the rumored May 2, 2015, showdown between Miguel Cotto and Saul “Canelo” Alvarez will meet rising star Gennady Golovkin next year.

WBC President, Maurico Sulaiman will let Cotto have a voluntary title defense of his middleweight strap before having to face the mandatory challenger to his belt in Golovkin according to BoxingScene.com.

This would allow the May 2 clash between Cotto and Canelo, which is scheduled to rival the usual Cinco De Mayo boxing king Floyd Mayweather’s first bout of 2015.

GGG will have a voluntary bout himself in February, which is rumored to be against Martin Murray if the England native can take care of business  against Domenico Spada Saturday.

Golovkin—whom Gary Andrew Poole of The Atlanctic called “The Scariest Man in Boxing”—is on a 18-fight KO win streak and that over-the-top power has many feeling that top fighters are ducking the Kazakhstan native.

Cotto’s career has seen a resurgence as of late since teaming up with Hall of fame trainer Freddie Roach. Roach once told Fight Hub TV that Cotto told him he only had three fights left in him, but with how fresh he’s looked recently, don’t expect Cotto to hang it up after his next fight, which would be the third fight since mentioning that to Roach.

If the proposed order of fights goes through as planned then we can expect 2015 to easily eclipse 2014 in terms of big fights taking place, as they were few and far between this past year.

Throw into the mix that any of the three middleweight fighters in the mix in Cotto, Canelo and Golovkin also having a chance to face Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. if he ever steps into the ring again and the middleweight division looks like the weight class to keep an eye in next year.
