Although the bout was never made official, the proposed Dec. 6 fight date for Saul “Canelo” Alvarez has been called off due to the former 154-pound champ having a nagging injury.

Golden Boy put out a press release Monday night announcing the cancellation.

“Due to a persistent ankle injury, Canelo Alvarez must withdraw from his Dec. 6 bout. He thanks his fans for their support and looks forward to big things in 2015 on HBO.

“Golden Boy Promotions and HBO are reviewing their options for the Dec. 6 date.”

The fight was supposed to feature Canelo taking on Joshua Clottey, a bout that many weren’t too excited about seeing anyway.

With his last three fights being featured on Showtime Pay-Per-View, the Dec. 6 bout was to be aired on regular cable in Alvarez’s return to HBO.

Canelo signed a multi-year deal with HBO in September after being with Showtime for his last five fights.

If Canelo was successful in the now canceled December fight, a bigtime PPV showdown with Migeul Cotto was reportedly waiting in the balance.

There’s now word to what the injury setback does for the proposed Canelo-Cotto bout, but it would be safe to say that Canelo’s next fight will not be until that May 2 fight date, with a Cotto clash sill being highly likely at this point.
