Bob Arum says he has Carl Froch lined up for Chavez Jr. in Jan.; Calls Mikey Garcia situation sad

Arum on Chavez Jr and Garcia

With Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. only fighting three times in the last two years, some are beginning to feel that the former middleweight titleist is wasting his career away while it’s in its prime.

Chavez Jr. reportedly turned down a fight with current two-belt middleweight champ Gennady Golovkin, who fights Saturday night against Marco Antonio Rubio, and there has been little on what his plans in the ring are since.

Top Rank CEO, Bob Arum, told Fight Hub that there is a deal for Chavez Jr. to face British star Carl Froch, who holds the WBA and IBF super middleweight straps, in a Las Vegas showdown toward the end of January.

Froch would get his dream of fighting in Vegas out of the way and Chavez Jr. would net a quality opponent with the opportunity to add to his super middleweight titles as he already owns the WBC version.

For the sake of the sport, let’s hope that Chavez Jr. isn’t listening to those around him—mainly Al Haymon, if what Arum says is true—who say he is going to net a Floyd Mayweather Jr. showdown in a trio of bouts offered to him.

There is no way Mayweather and Chavez Jr. could negotiate a catch weight to meet at, as Chavez Jr. can barely make the 168-pound super middleweight limit these days.

Despite Chavez Jr. saying his contract with Top Rank is over and that he is a free agent, arum insists that he still owes the promotional entity one more fight, so why not make the Froch bout and go out with a bang?
