Some huge things are happening in boxing and Oscar De La Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions are at the forefront of that news. Earlier today De La Hoya and their star pupil Canelo Alvarez held a press conference at the Golden Boy offices in Los Angeles to announce Canelo’s return to the network that first introduced him to fight fans in the United States.
It is a big blow to Showtime Sports, but something that De La Hoya felt needed to happen for the benefit of Alvarez. No details about what type of deal this was or if any other money was involved but all parties made a point to mention it would be a long term-multi fight deal.
Now this can be seen as good news for fans as this move signals that a potential fight with Miguel Cotto can be easier to make now. It is important to note that the tension between Golden Boy and Top Rank has been fizzing with both figures openly having dialogue with each other in recent months.
