Bob Arum: Pacquiao-Mayweather still possible if Pac-Man beats Rios convincingly

Although most of the boxing community has given up hope on a possible Manny Pacquiao-Floyd Mayweather mega-fight going down, Top Rank’s Bob Arum has not.

Arum recently told the Australian radio show Evenings With Mark Fine on 1116 SEN Radio (h/t Boxing Scene) that if Pacquiao looks like his old self and wins in dominate fashion on Nov. 23 against Brandon Rios, that the fight everyone has been wanting to see for years could finally come to fruition in late 2014.

“If Manny demonstrates that he’s back and there’s a public outcry, we should be able to get it done,” Arum said

Arum went on to mention how the two rival networks, HBO and Showtime, have worked together in the past for major bouts, citing the Lennox Lewis (HBO)-Mike Tyson (Showtime) fight in 2002.

Sure it has happened in the past, but right now, the two networks are on worse terms than they have ever been and that does not bode well for the bout.

Add that to the longstanding Mayweather-Arum feud and the chances of the fight actually being made are as unlikely as ever despite Arum’s statement.

With a win Pacquiao will still be the biggest possible draw for Mayweather, who has four fights left on a six-fight deal he signed with Showtime. The fight would likely break the 2.2 million pay-per-view buys his bout with Canelo Alvarez did, which brought the highest amount of money any PPV has ever done.

It remains to be heard how the Mayweather camp feels about Arum’s hope to make the bout next year, but as we have seen in the past words out of the two fighters camps mean nothing, as despite both fighters claiming that wanted to fight before, we never saw the two square off in the ring.
